This evening at the DIA (Detroit Institute Of Arts) young ladies from Metro Detroit participated in a conversation about arts in the community and best ways to change the dynamic of things they don't like in their own communities. They also got a chance to get a tour of a few exhibits. The event was hosted by the writer of I Am Genius (Candace Cox-Wimberley), Sharon Harrell (the engagement and inclusion coordinator at the Detroit Institute of Arts), and the Park West Foundation.
Young ladies ages 14 to 17 gave their opinions on how they feel about their communities. Many of these young women said They wish that they had more art and their community. Some of them talked about beautification of their neighborhoods and schools. After receiving a tour of the African American Contemporary Art Exhibit, many of the young ladies felt a sense of Pride learning about history that they feel is not included in their schools curriculum.
Overall the event was successful because it introduced a world of art to these young ladies that they did not know existed. Also he gave them an idea about their Futures and what they could possibly be when they get older. The event was both educational and creative. There needs to be more conversations like this in the community. I can't stress how important it is to hear the youth voice on such issues.
